Two salt lakes, a Benedictine monastery and the easiest island bike loop on the Adriatic. Here is how we plan a Mljet day.

Mljet is the day trip for people who think they’ve seen islands. A third of it is national park, the pines run straight down to the waterline, and in the middle two saltwater lakes hide an islet with a 12th-century Benedictine monastery on it. An island, inside a lake, inside an island.

The crossing

From Dubrovnik it’s about ninety minutes of coastline — the Elaphiti to starboard, then the long green flank of Mljet. We dock at Pomena, a ten-minute walk from the park gate. That walk matters: the catamaran crowd lands at the other end and walks forty.

The two lakes

Veliko and Malo Jezero — the big and small lakes — connect to the sea by a narrow channel, which keeps them saltwater but a couple of degrees warmer than the open Adriatic. The first swim of our season happens here every year.

The monastery islet

The islet of St Mary sits in the middle of the big lake, monastery and all, reached by a small park boat included with entry. Give it forty-five minutes: the cloister, a coffee at the islet cafe, and the view back across the water to the pines.

The bike loop

Rent bikes at Mali Most, the bridge between the lakes, and ride the big lake’s loop — nine flat kilometres, the best hour on the island. No cars, no climbs worth mentioning, and a swim ladder every few hundred metres for when you overheat.
