Do I need a passport for a Montenegro day trip from Dubrovnik?
Yes — every traveller needs their own physical passport; the crossing leaves the EU and a Schengen ID card won’t do at this border.
How long is the border wait from Croatia to Montenegro?
It varies hour to hour in summer, which is why we’ve timed the day around it for years — out early, back late, so you spend the day in the bay, not at the barrier.
Is Kotor worth a day trip from Dubrovnik?
Two UNESCO towns — baroque Perast and walled Kotor — on one of Europe’s most scenic coast roads. Yes.
What documents do I need?
A physical passport with at least 6 months’ validity. Schengen national ID cards are not accepted at the Montenegrin border.
Will there be a long queue at the border?
Sometimes, peak summer Saturdays can mean a 1-2 hour wait at the height of the day. We leave at 7.30am to be at Karasovići before the queues form, and return mid-afternoon for the same reason.
Do I need to change money?
No. Montenegro uses the Euro despite not being in the EU. Card payments are accepted in Kotor and Perast.
Is the climb to St. John's Fortress required?
Not at all, it’s an optional 40-minute climb of 1,350 steps. Stunning views, but the trip is complete without it. Drivers will suggest a quieter alternative if you’d rather skip it.
